    Hey Adam!!!

Thanks a lot for the Maccast. I got to say that I will be out of the country for 4 weeks on a leisure trip to South America and decided not to take my Powerbook. That means four weeks without my computer and the maccast. I am starting to have withdrawal symptoms before I actually leave. Does that make me a Mac Geek?

    Thanks

Wonder how the “no virtualization” in Leopard is going to sit with many of the Mac faithful as well as new switchers. I can see the advantage of not using virtualization ( like playing Windows only games) or something, but just to run a few Windows apps that don’t use a lot of resources not having virtualization would be a hassle. Unless Apple is thinking of making it a third party solution still. Like Parallels or Virtual PC. I heard that its now free. I send ya a link.

One solution for backup that you didn’t mention is to back it up to DV tape via your camcorder. DVBackup (http://www.coolatoola.com/) purports to do the job, squeezing 18Gb on a 60 minute DV tape with compression. I’ve not used it, so YMMV but given that the OP was talking about huge multimedia files, this could be an option. Thanks for a fab podcast, from this new switcher. cheers, TP

    Re: Virtualization – use parallels

Re: Randomly shutting down macbooks, just regressing the OS version. Install a previous version of the OS to prove or disprove the 10.4.7 is the culprit. If the issue is heat related, so much more the intel and low watt idea. My advice: Apple should start building their own MOBOs again. I think Intel does that for Apple now.

It has been tried and it has no effect. Even a clean install with 10.4.6 As far as temprature they can just be turned on and are cold, and they turn off. The new issue is vertical lines. People are zapping the Pram several times a day. I have both issues, the only thing I am sure of is I had no problems before the 10.4.7 update. It is at Apple now for a Unknown part replacment that they are waiting on. Others have said they are replacing the Logic Board to fix the problem. The problem seems huge and getting bigger if you track the discusion board on the Apple Support site and the number of posts and views. I have Mac’s since the Plus ( I worked on OS 6.05) and this is the second Mac I have had problems with my PB 1.67 had to go in for Logic board replacement when it failed. They need to really beef up QA IMO.

Great show Adam! Just wanted to correct you on the codename for the Intel Core 2 Duo chip. You said it was “Crusoe” when in fact it is “Conroe.” Wasn’t “Crusoe” that old Transmeta chip?

Keep up the great work and keep those show coming!

Great show as always Adam and Great choice on the music with “Panic! at the Disco”. I just discovered them recently myself and I own the same track.

    Take Care

Instead of paying for uploading to Amazons backup service, you could use http://www.streamload.com/ which comes with 25GB of storage for free, you can buy more, and it is always free to upload.

You only pay to download when you go over a predefined amount of bandwidth.

    I think it’s a good service.

  9. maccast | Jul 17 2006 - 08:08

    Phil,
As a backup solution a restricted bandwidth plan might not work for most people. If you backup a 5GB iMovie project for example, when you need it back you would need to download 5GB. I looked on the Streamload site and it looks to me like your downloads are restricted to 100 MB per month on the free plan and you can only get more by upgrading your account. The download plan that gives you 25GB of download a month will run you $99.95 per month!!

Regarding shutdowns after 10.4.7: This happened to my wife’s MacBook. I would discard the version of OS X as the culprit. Once it starts happening, it happens regardless of what is running. It even happens while in Target Disk Mode, making it very difficult to backup the disk to another Mac. I found resetting the PMU several times, and running without the battery seemed to do the trick, allowing the MacBook to run for a few hours before the random shut downs began again.

We are shipping it back to Apple, and they are sending a brand-new replacement.

Regarding large-file backup, I’m personally holding out a fair amout of hope for the new HD-DVD & Blu-Ray formats. That should be plenty of space to hold those raw iMovie and iDVD files. For our business backup, I still go with CDs mainly, with and occasional DVD when file sizes get extra-large. I’m still a little leery of having too large a disk (DVD or otherwise) with too much important data on it. I like to break it up into CD-sizeed chunks when possible just for the extra “safety in numbers” factor.

Regarding the issue of backing up data on Macs.
    I use my gmail account.
I forward a copy of all my pop mail to gmail, so I always have a copy.
There is also a free app called gDisk.. you can find it at versiontracker.com.
gDisk lets you convert your gmail account to a webdisk.
I use that to store my movies and music.
Google will rule the world one day..just watch.

    Hey Adam,

Just to let you know my 11-month-old Powerbook G4 15″ 1.67GHz eventually went into Apple under AppleCare and, guess what… has been shutting down due to temperature problems and a failed logic board which I experienced since installing… 10.4.7!

Actually I spoke to Apple today and they said they are also replacing my HDD for some reason. Wonder if it’s being changed to a lower heat-emitting drive?

    Anyway thanks,

    Matt

FYI, Just reporting another instance of this sudden shut down problem. I have an iBook G4. I updated to 10.4.7 last week. I heard about this issue for the first time yesterday while listening to this podcast. Oddly enough, today was the first time my iBook suddenly shut off as others have reported. LOL

Thanks Adam for the great show!

The story about jungle disk was interesting.
However, getting this to work has been really confusing.
I have twenty years experience in I.T. and it was daunting for me. So I understand a little better about dot Mac backup. It’s typical apple software. point and click and it works. However if you have the time and patience, jungle disk is worth checking out. I have started doing my daily backups to jungle disk instead of idisk.
will be curious to see how much it costs…

I’m wondering why everyone is assuming that you have to buy a Nike shoe in order to use this Nike+Ipod device. There seems to be no reason why you couldn’t shove the shoe device in your sock or under the soft sole of any shoe. Can anyone tell if there is a reason to pay for the Nike shoes in order to use this new device? If not, I smell a scam!
