While PowerPC chips will still be supported, Apple has dropped a reference from the 64 bit page of Leopard of still supporting G3s.

They haven't said you won'tbe able to run Leopard on your G3 iMac, but they did removed an affirmative statement of support for the chip.

1. The reason the Mac Pro standard configuration does not include WiFi or Bluetooth is that business usually excludes these from their purchases. I assume Apple would like to sell some very big lots of these Macs. This is the same reason the standard keyboard and mouse are USB.

2. The backup created by Time Machine is not bootable so programs like SuperDuper will still be useful if not essential.

3. You can use one of the internal drives as the TM backup. Indeed, any mountable volume should be usable with TM. It is suggested for best performance with the present developmental version that the backup drive be at least 1.5-2X the size of the boot drive.

Victor was mis remembering a comment made within the Friends in Tech mailing list having to do with $2500 limit on government credit cards. Not specifically any store.

macFanDave,
I was mistaken, I thought the downgrade to 2.0Ghz was $500, but it's only $300. So you are right.

I had a couple spots in the podcast where the audio just disappeared for a few seconds. Anybody else have that problem?

Also, the talk about putting notes, calendars, etc into Mail seems to me to emulate Outlook rather than being an innovation. I think it's a good idea and about time.

As far as Steve and the keynote goes my view is that he was really struggling (like I was) to get that excited about that much of the stuff. Sure some was really neat, a lot (i.e. the iChat stuff) is already available thru 3rd parties and some (like stationary on your email) was really not that exciting!!

I think they used a range of presenters to a) try and pad out the presentation and b) try and create some excitement :-)

I'm 15 minutes into the MacCast and have to make two points:

1) Where did you get this idea that there is a $2500 credit card limit at the Apple Store? On the night Panther came out, our Apple Store was giving 10% off on hardware that night. With the help of my sister-in-law, I got my Dual 2GHz G5 for $2700 + 8.25% Sales Tax. There was no problem with the credit card. Also, if such a limit were in place, how would they have sold a 30" Cinema Display when they were $2,999?

2) Adam, I was thinking like you. I went to the Apple Store Online and configured my own El Cheapo. The lowest I could get was $2,144. How can you say that you can get one under $2,000?

As far as Steve's appearance and demeanor is concerned, keep in mind that Apple is being investigated for some financial irregularities. Government regulators are quite thorough when the target is a Democrat. Republican businesses get much more gentle treatment -- look at the BP pipeline. How the hell did that happen?!

dont forget that WWDC is aimed at developers. It is not a consumer oriantated show. I am always disapointed after a WWDC because there is nothing there really for people like me. I remember being boored out of my skin after WWDC05. Lets wait until the next one and then we can make judgements.

come to think about it, Steve usually does his Keynote's solo. But this time he had three other people helping him. He is only 51 or 50 years old, perhaps he just wasn't feeling well. However we saw his famous "reality distortion field" slip a bit during Macworld according to Leo Laporte while talking on the Macworld 2006 special of TWiT.

Rich, Chuck,

Yes, he did look somewhat unwell.
Hope this is not due to a recurrence of cancer that he had surgery for a few years ago.

Actually, come to think of it, what with Job's larger than life persona; his immense drive and creative vision, many of us know little of his personal life.

Is he married? Does he have any children? Where does he live?

I just priced out a comperable Dell system to Apple's middle of the road Mac Pro. The dual dual-core 2.66ghz priced out at a hefty $3,452 USD.

I hope the Time Machine in Leopard allows to delete files permanently. I am sure it will be possible, otherwise it would be a big problem, don't you think?
And thanks for a great coverage of the WWDC 2006.
