Listener Jason pointed me to this video tip he found posted over on lifehacker.com. I figured, since many of you may be new iPod owners, you could find this useful. Personally, I don’t have much love for the iPod earbuds and use a pair of over-the-ear Sony headphones. I do however, carry my original iPod earbuds as backup up, so this tip will help me keep things untangled in my laptop bag. It’s sometimes the simple things that make me smile.

I’m not so sure this is the best way to wrap them. I am a cinematographer, and proper cord wrapping is a must. I fear that if you wrap your headphones like this, over time, you’ll wear out the stranded wire fibers and render them useless.
I agree with Nathan. Never treat cables like that.
I’ve coiled my cables like this for years and have never had a problem but the cables I have done this to are electrical cables and the only reason I do this is to keep the cable length short.
I wouldn’t do this to my ipod headphones as Nathan’s experience may have some truth to it and the ipod cable is rather thin and likely more delicate than thick electrical cable.
I wouldn’t with any other cables but I go through headphones so regularly that they don’t have a long life so it’s better than wrapping them around the ipod itself….
I’m with haydn. Like nathan, I’m also a cinematographer, but I’ve never had my cables go bad on me from wrapping like this before I either lost them, or had an accident.

But you have to also remember that the standard iPod headphones don’t really last that long to begin with, so I think as long as you stick to a cheap pair like this, it doesn’t really matter. Besides, the more you pay for headphones, then all the more likely they’re going to come with a case anyway. But good thought.

I just wanted to chime in that I bought the 1G iPod soon after launch and have always used it heavily. Of course I’ve upgraded since then and now have the 5G iPod, but I’m still using the original iPod ear buds from that 1G five years ago with no complaints. So in my experience at least, the ear buds have had a very fine life span.
I got the over-the-head earphones, which are esp. good when outside, over a cap. The earbuds are used when I don’t want to look like a disc jockey.
The problem I have with the buds is that they fall out of my ears every few minutes. Is there a special technique for holding them in? Maybe duct tape? Velcro fasteners on the earlobes for a super-cool “Apple look” even when not using them? :)
I have operated a videoconference service for 12 years and winced when I saw the twisting going on of the wires… but did it to my earbuds anyway. Will see if the tradeoff is worth it. My suggestion is to induce turns to keep the wire straight as much as you can.
