Maccast Loop – Episode 032
In this episode we talk with special guest Ken Ray, Mac OS Ken and Technocracy Radio, about the current competition facing iTunes. Have services like Hulu.com and Amazon MP3 begun to take the shine off iTunes? We discuss the current criticisms security experts have made against Apple’s decision to change their approach to security and firewalling in Leopard. Finally we talk about which features in Leopard we find annoying as well as which ones we have uncovered as hidden gems in the new OS.

Maccast Loop – Episode 003
In this episode we discuss gaming on the Mac. We wax nostalgic about all the great titles form the early days of the Mac. Great games like Dark Castle, Maelstorm, and Marathon Infinity. I give you a little history of Halo for the XBox and how it actually began life as a Mac only game. We talk a little bit about what’s happening with the latest games on OS X and ask how Intel may or may not change the future of Mac gaming. There is some discussion of iPod games and questions about what Apple might have planned for gaming on the new Apple TV. Of course at the end of the episode we take time for some questions and talk a bit about the rumors of 8-core Mac Pros.

Maccast Loop – Episode 002
In this episode we discuss the benefits of purchasing AppleCare protection. Is it really worth it? How does it work? What are some tips for getting the most out of your coverage? We swap stories on our experiences and look deeper into why you should consider using Apple’s coverage. Next we focus in on your Dock. Based on Jack Hodgson’s article on Maccast.com, we ask: What’s the most useful application in your dock? The one you always use. What’s the most fun/creative item? The one you enjoy using most. What’s the most unusual item? The one that would make people say hmmm. We follow-up on using external USB drives with your the new Airport Extreme basestation (Airdrive) and discuss tips for encrypting the files on your Mac to keep them safe from prying eyes. All this, plus your questions in the latest Maccast Loop. Enjoy.

Thanks to my audio engineer and producer, Victor Cajiao (Typical Mac User Podcast [iTunes]) and to all the listeners and participants who make this show possible.

Production note: Just a quick note and apology to many of you who tried to listen to the stream and participate in today’s show, but couldn’t get in. There were a couple of technical issues, one was our fault and the other was host related and beyond our control. Please know these errors were unusual and we entourage you to join us next week. For now, the audio is available here and in the podcast feed [ iTunes ]. We appreciate your understanding.

What is different about the Loop vs. other podcasts is that it is recorded live each Sunday at 10:00 AM PST/1:00 PM EST. Using the Talkshoe network and technology we are able to offer live audience participation using text and audio chat. Each week in the Maccast Loop I will go more in depth on the hot topics from the prior weeks Maccast and also take questions directly from the audience. The Loop narrows the gap and closes the loop between podcaster and audience, making you more a part of the show than ever before. If you missed this first edition don’t worry, it’s still a podcast. You can subscribe in iTunes or by using the links above and then join us live next week. I really hope you like this new addition and thanks for listening.

Maccast Loop – Episode 001
In this episode we discuss hard drives and associated technologies, syncing and backing up your Mac. Will Apple release Leopard at NAB? Off site storage solutions and services. Firewire vs USB 2 performance. Why does Apple keep delaying the Apple TV? Does Apple needs to get better HD and 5.1 audio support on iTunes to make Apple TV really appealing to consumers? More talk on DRM and recation to Steve Jobs open letter on DRM. Will Apple provide storage for our iTunes video and audio purchases and give us on-demand access, “iTunes on Demand”. Using Gmail for off-site file storage. Apple in school multi-media programs. Fixing a skipping iPod.

Maccast Loop – Pilot Episode
In this episode we talk a bit about Airport Extreme and wireless networking, the advantages (and pitfalls) of 802.11n vs. 802.11g, how to locate your Mac’s MAC (Ethernet) address, possible podcast updates in iLife ‘07. Do Mac users need anti-virus? Should we be concerned about viruses and spyware? What are your risks and are we more at risk now that we have technology like Boot Camp and Parallels? RA recent switcher is curious about running XP or Vista on Mac to easy the transition to the Mac way of doing things. Is that a good idea? Do you shift gradually or are you better going cold turkey? Our advice for new Mac owners making the transition. Proof Adam can’t spell to save his life, Crucial.com. New iPhone ad due to air during the Oscars tonight. Predictions on what the ad will be. Our thoughts on the rumors of Apple possibly making black iMacs. Recommendations on books and resources for getting started in Cocoa programming. Fixing a stuck key on a new Macbook Pro. Belkin’s Express Card 34 integrated smart card reader and what card formats it supports. Listener Heath’s thoughts on DRM free music and wondering if DRM builds a potential obsolescence directly into your media. With DRM are we placing a “timer on our culture”? Using Boot Camp Beta and what happens when it expires? What will be the options for continued use of Boot Camp?
