V News
V Lines, availability, and shortages
V Seems like the 18 different model variations caused some issue for Apple in distribution. Also the rumors of lower than expected launch day inventory may have been true.
* 5th Ave store in NYC reported longer lines than for the 1st gen iPad
* Early estimates (Gene Munster) are at 400,000 to 500,000 iPads which would be consistent with the pre-launch inventory predictions
* Some predictions of 1st weekend sales of 600,000 units
* 3rd party retailers seemed to have around 10 units a piece if at all.
V Apple seemed to have issues especially in the 3G options
* My store had several models of the AT&T and Verizon units that they just didn't get in at all
V Similar stories from other Apple Retail store
* Walmart, didn't have any 3G at 1 location here in San Diego
* Wonder if Verizon and AT&T stores had better 3G model selection.
* Wi-fi models seemed to be in good supply
* Lines seemed to range from 100s to 1000s depending on location
* That or demand was higher than expected
V Online sales did start at 12:01 AM PSt, but quickly the ship times extended to 2-3 weeks.
* Reports of early order ship notices for next week, or the 18th, but later orders are further off.
V Who is buying and what?
* All the data is antidotal, but…
* 70% already own and iPad 1 (Mobclix - 50 people)
* 20% buying 3G (Mobclix - 50 people)
V iFixit tears down iPad 2
* Stripped it, less than 2 hours after the east coast release
V What they learned
V 1GHz Dual Core A5
* Manufacture dates of late January to early Feb 2011
* 512 MB of RAM
* 3.8V 25 watt hour unit vs. 24.8 watt in iPad 1
V Glass is 27% thinner
* Glued on and not clips. Much harder to remove.
* Cameras are low MPs. Less than 1. VGA (600 x 800) resolution front and 720p back.
* Extremely small speakers
V According to Cult of Mac iPad 2's are sold unlocked
* Still need to use a supported carrier, Verizon (CDMA) or AT&T (GSM)
* Move your AT&T SIM if you have a grandfathered unlimited data plan
* 9 to 5 Mac says some early reports of the 'yellow tint' screen issue (remember that from last year?) Glue used to marry the glass to the digitizer that needs to dry.
V Feedback, Comments and Commentary
V iPad 2 line interviews
* Play interviews.
V Erasing a only iPad you want to sell
* You may be wanting to put you're iPad or any iOS device back to it's "out of the box" condition to sell.
V Remove all your data and set up iOS as a new device from your Mac
* Launch iTunes and connect your device.
* Select the device in the source list.
* In the Summary tab, click the Restore button.
* Wait until iTunes has completed the restore process. If you encounter any restore errors, please see Update and restore alert messages on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
* When iTunes provides the Set Up Your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch screen, choose Set Up As New.
V Can also remove all your data and set up iOS as a new device from the device
* This is basically the same thing you can do remotely using Find My iPhone's 'Wipe…' feature
V From you're iOS device:
* Tap Settings.
* Tap General.
* Tap Reset.
* Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
V What happens is different depending on the device
V If your device supports hardware encryption:
* iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPads, 3rd and 4th Gen iPod Touch
* Erases user settings and information by removing the encryption key to the data.
* Takes a few minutes.
V If not:
* Overwrites user settings and information, writing a series of ones to the data partition
* Can take several hours
V Can't lose power during the on device erase process. If that happens you need to restore the device in iTunes.
* Could then erase it from there using the first procedure or repeat the steps on the device after the restore.
V Get iMovie Running on an iPad 1
* Worked with Bryan Chaffin at TMO to write up the details
* Use the latest version of the iPhone Configuration Utility from Apple to load the app instead of iTunes
* iTunes won't recognize it as authorized and will try to remove it.
