wedge Gates says iPod success is unsustainable

* Microsoft founder Bill Gates told a the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that he sees the popularity of the iPod as unsustainable and that mobile phones will take over as the choice portable music player.

* Another build to OS 10.4.1 was seeded to developers Friday. Still contains a bug in Address Book to .Mac syncing.

wedge Apple may be leaving KHTML for it's own technology

* Safari has been built on the open source rendering engine KHTML

* Apple may soon be abandoning this in favor of it's own WebCore technology.

* KHTML was originally written to work on top of KDE (the K Desktop Environment), an interface for Linux and Unix operating systems.

* The decision is us upsetting some KDE open source developers.

* Settled for an undisclosed amount of money

* For an iPod ad than ran beginning in July 2003 on MTV featuring a kid listening to an iPod singing the words to Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”

* Delivers added support for DVD Studio Pro 4 authored HD DVDs

-Improved Global Player settings.

wedge Apple granted patent on Tablet computer design

* The US patent was filed on March 17th 2004 and posted May 10th, 2005.

* Images filed with the patent show a tablet design with images of a man using the device with a touch screen

wedge Toshiba announces 45GB next-gen DVD

* A new version of the HD-DVD format adds a 3rd layer to support up to 45GB of storage. The new disks are read only. Previous versions allowed up to 30GB of storage.

* The competing BluRay DVDs store 50GB on dual layer discs

wedge Malicious .MOV files possible in Tiger

* David Remahl in Sweden discovered a possible security vunerability in .mov files in Tiger

* The exploit takes advantage "compositions," which have access to powerful tools known as "patches." Combining patches that provide advanced system information with patches that load information from the Internet allows an embedded .mov file to leak system details.

* Possible Leaked information:
Local user name (long and short)
Computer name
Local IP
OS / kernel version
CPU / RAM / GPU configuration
Names (human-readable) of Bonjour services on the local network
Local or system time
Volume of audio input
Lists of images (including pdfs) matching arbitrary spotlight queries
Lists of images (including pdfs) in specific directories (relative to / or ~)
The existence of image and movie files can indicate the existence of certain software packages

wedge Toast 6.1 blocks iTunes download burning

* Roxio has released Toast Titanium X 6.1 for Mac OS X 10.2 or later, with a block on using Toast to burn iTunes downloads

* Roxio has noted that after discussions with Apple, this latest version will "no longer allow customers to create audio CDs, audio DVDs, or export audio to their hard drive using purchased iTunes music store content."

wedge XBox 360 Demos were running on Macs

* The nifty clips of video games supporting Microsoft's new Xbox 360 console are running on Apple machines, Microsoft confirmed on Friday.

* the Xbox 360 uses an IBM PowerPC with three 3.2GHz symmetrical cores.

* A lot of people saying 360 takes minimalist design queues and white styling from the iPod and Apple
