V Feedback, Comments and Commentary
V Applecare follow-up
V With all coverages. Read the fine print.
* Most don't cover "cosmetic" damage or "consumables".
V Only as good as the service behind the coverage
* How easy is it to file a claim, how long to get your money?
* Customer Service.
V Credit Card Protection
* Limited time. 90-day on my AMEX
* Only up to $1,000 year
V Homeowners or Renters policies
* Homeowners can have high deductibles and filing some claims can raise your rates
* Renters typically has lower deductibles
V Accidental loss and replacement
V Many of you have pointed out that 3rd party services offer this for fees at or about the same as Apple
* Is it worth it? $200.00 up front to cover a $500 device on the off chance you drop it?
* Typically there is also still a nominal deductible.
V Squaretrade
* Some listeners mentioned this company
V They extend the Apple warranty coverage and cover accidental damage
* Must be bought within 90 days of purchase
* Accidental damage typically has a $50 deductible
* Doesn't cover loos, but you can get a refund on coverage.
V 3 years of iPad coverage is $169.00 (now $135.99)
* if you don'y buy on the same day ADH doesn't cover the first 30 days
* Waiving ADH deductible on iPads
V EU and UK 2 -year warranty law
* EU directive 1999/44/EC - Supposedly covers all goods sold in any EU country for defects for 2 years. Repair or replacement
V An article in the UK Guardian says it's not quite that simple
* If a country has laws, like the UK's Sale of Goods Act (SOGA), that exceed the language of the EU directive in most areas then those laws apply.
* If the item fails by defect it must be "reasonable" to expect it to last longer. And if it's after 6 moths the retailer can demand you provide evidence that it failed as a result of a manufacturing fault. Which could be tricky.
V Not every Applecare fairytale has a happy ending
V I did get a number of these emails too, but mostly from folks who didn't have Applecare.
* Even more the reason to get it.
* Rupinder had a hinge pop on the screen of his Powerbook G4 3 weeks out of Applecare and Apple wouldn't cover it.
V Reality is that Apple doesn't have to cover repairs outside of Applecare. They also don't cover wear and tear, cosmetic, accidental damage, or consumables, like batteries.
* batteries that lose 50% of charge while under Applecare are covered.
* It is at the discretion of the Genius or Applecare agent to do non or out of warranty service
V Some advice
* Be honest, polite and courteous.
* Try again. Took 5 trips with my iPhone battery issue.
* Cut your losses.
V Copy full path in Finder
V Gert-Willem discovered some Terminal hacks to show the full POSIX path in the Finder Title bar
V Show path in titlebar
* defaults write com.apple.finder _FXShowPosixPathInTitle -bool YES
* Relaunch Finder. Option+Click Finder icon in dock and choose 'Relaunch'
V There are also several built-in way in Snow Leopard to show path info
V Titlebar icon
* Command+Click the title in the tilebar and a list will drop down.
* Selecting an item will jump to that location in the window
V Path toolbar item
* You can add a path drop down icon to your Finder Toolbar
* View-->Customize Toolbar… Then drag the 'Path icon' to the toolbar.
* Clicking the icon will give you a drop down showing the current path
V Add Path Bar to the bottom of the Finder window
* View-->Show Path Bar
* Now the Path will be displayed at the bottom of the window.
V What about copying the full path?
V Pathfinder
* You can Command+Click (Right+click) and choose 'Copy Path'
* Does it in UNIX, HFS, Windows, Terminal, URL, and Name versions
V Use the Terminal (Applications-->Utilities-->Terminal)
* 1) Navigate to the folder in the Finder and then drag the folder into the Terminal window. This will populate the full path at the prompt in the Terminal.
* 2) Select the path in the Terminal window and copy it.
* It does insert the UNIX version so if you have spaces in the path name they will be escaped.
V Automator Workflow
* A guy wrote an Automator workflow (Marcus Barnes) that you can add to your Services folder in Snow Leopard
V Download the Snow Leopard version from his site and then copy it to the Services folder
* Basically runs an Applescript to get the POSIX path from the Finder and then passes it to the clipboard. You can view his workflow in Automator to see how it ticks.
* it will be a .workflow file.
* ~/Users/[User]/Library/Services/
V What's your iPad for?
V Listener Douglas had some great plans
V Speaking
* Presentations using Keynote and VGA connector kit
* Taking notes and doing prep (Omni Outliner)
V Teaching
* Class prep
* Textbooks
* "Deskside" - Illustrative tool. Websites, videos, pictures, etc.
V As a mobile device, or not.
* Access to free wi-fi hotspots is key for many
V The "living room" Mac
* Media center control
* "Multitasking" - while watching TV, movies, etc.
V Reading
* eBooks, Magazines, Newspapers, iBooks?
V Quick Look in Mail.app
V Marty was wondering why Quick Look didn't seem to work in from the message list in Mail.app
* Wants to press spacebar and see the Message an/or Attachments without using the preview pane.
* Double click will open the email in a new window.
V From the list view, preview pane, or window you can Quick Look the attachments. File-->Quick Look Attachments... (Command+Y)
* In the preview pane or email window you can also use the spacebar technique, but you need top have the attachments highlighted first.
V Quick Look Mail in the Finder
V Email in Mail.app is searchable with Spotlight, so we can take advantage of this.
* In the Finder, perform a search. Command+F or Command+Option+Spacebar from any app to bring up the search pane.
* Click the little "+" icon in the upper right to add a search criteria.
* Choose 'Kind', then 'Other' and in the textbox type 'Mail Message'
V You should now see a list of all your email messages and you can select and Quick Look item to read their contents.
* This is all mailboxes, so junk, etc. isn't filtered out.
* Viewing this way won't mark messages as read.
* Embedded images might not display properly
* You cant view attachments this way
V Double clicking the mail in the Finder will open it in Mail.app
* From there you can reply, etc.
* You can set additional criteria, say 'Created date' so you can just have a search of recent emails.
* Save the search to the sidebar and you will always have it for quick email access right from the Finder without launching Mail.app
V Mac operation over 10,000 ft
* I've had a couple people ask about this.
* It's for use outside, so not pressurized.
* Winter PArk and Alma Colorado in the US are above 10,000 ft. Cities in Tibet above 10,00 ft.
* So why is this the limit? LCD, hard drive?
* It's only the range that Apple certifies their equipment to work in, doesn't mean they won't work
