Apple's Q1 2019 Results

V
Apple's actual revenue performance fell right in line with the revised guidance.

*
Coming in at $83.4 billion with $19,97 billion in profits for the Holiday quarter

*
Originally Apple had estimated $89 to $93 billion, but revised that down earlier in the month.

*
Revenue was down about $4 billion from the same quarter a year ago, but profit was almost at the $20.1 billion they reported last year.

*
Apple said iPhone revenue was down 15 percent from the prior year, but that total revenue from all other products and services grew 19 percent.

*
They also said Mac revenue was up 9 percent, Home, Wearables, and Accessories revenue up 33 percent (50 percent in wearables alone), and iPad revenue up 17 percent.

*
Services revenue reached an all-time high of $10.9 billion.

*
Even with the lowered guidance and drop in iPhone revenue, the quarter was the second-best in Apple's history in terms of revenue and profit.

V
This is the first quarter where Apple is no longer breaking down unit sales figures by product line

*
Strategy Analytics took a guess at breaking it out and this is how they predict it played out:

*
Tsubscribershey think Apple shipped 65.9 million iPhone's down from the 77.3 million they shipped in the same period last year.

V
Other items of note:

*
1.4 billion active Apple devices in the market, 900 million of those are iPhones.

V
Apple Music now has 50 million paid subscribers, up from 40 million in about six months.

*
Subscribers will be able to stream Apple music on American Airlines flights without having to pay for WiFi access.

*
Apple News has over 85 million monthly active users.

*
1.8 billion Apple Pay transactions in the holiday quarter.

*
Over 360 million paid subscriptions across App Store, increase of 120 million from year ago

*
Apple is on track to double 2016 Services revenue by 2020

V
Apple is rethinking how it prices iPhones. It will no longer track the US dollar price exactly and instead set iPhone prices in local currency for each market.

*
That should be good news for international Apple fans especially in markets that tend to trend weaker against the dollar.

*
That will obviously impact Apple's bottom line though since they will be reducing their average selling price and cutting into margins.

V
Cook laid out a four part strategy for how Apple will leverage video streaming in 2019

*
Apple TV hardware

*
AirPlay 2, which we now now will be integrated into TVs from several manufacturers including Samsung and Visio

*
Leveraging growth of 3rd party subscription services

*
Producing their own first party original programming.

Group FaceTime bug allowed potential eavesdropping

*
Apple shutdown Group FaceTime this week

V
There is a bug that could allow a caller to both hear, and possibly see, a person invited to a group FaceTime Call

*
They way it worked was you'd initiate a FaceTime call with someone

*
While the call was still ringing, swipe up from the bottom of the display and tap Add person

*
Enter your own number as the person to add.

*
This would ten connect both parties to the call.

*
If the phone on the other end was asleep you'd just get audio, but if the person on the other end hit the power button (say to dismiss the call) then the video would connect as well.

*
Obviously a HUGE bug with Big security ramifications.

V
Apple shut down the service until they can issue a bug fix which is expected soon.

*
Still there are reports that a mother attempted to notify Apple of the bug a week before it was made public on social media and Reddit.

*
Apple told MacRumors they will issue a software update to re-enable the Group FaceTime feature for users next week.

V
Apple video service in Spring

*
Apple is reported telling partners to be ready in mid-April for an impending launch a few weeks later according the "The Information"

*
Apple Service will reportedly be supported by Apple selling in-app purchase subscriptions to premium services like HBO and STARZ inside the TV App.

V
The idea is you'd have one app and no longer need to install all the third part apps (not sure how browsing would work).

*
Maybe the "apps" would be TV apps inside the Apple TV app, like Messages apps?

V
Regardless I like the whole idea.

*
Apple originals for free, and up-sell on premium service offers, all controlled by a single App.

V
A few more next gen iPad details

*
Developer Steve Troughton-Smith continues to find and note interesting tidbits about a potential sixth gen iPad 9.7-inch and 5th gen iPad mini

*
References seem to indicate both model might contain support for Apple pencil and a smart keyboard

*
They are expected to have TouchID support, likely to keep costs down.

*
DigiTimes reports that Taiwanese manufacturer Compal Electronics will be an manufacturing partner for the iPad Mini 5 which they predict will launch, "later" this year.

V
This week we also got more iPhone and iOS 13 details coming out of Bloomberg

*
The backup early reports from other sources about a triple-lens camera system in the upcoming "Plus" model, with a more powerful laser-based 3D camera system coming in 2020

*
Apple will move from Lightning to USB-C connector (Thunderbolt)

*
They also mention a new upcoming "Dark Mode" for iOS 13

*
iPad-specific Home screen and improved file management

V
Google and Facebook apps blocked by Apple

*
Apple revoked their Enterprise Developer Certificates after they discovered both companies using those certificates in ways that violate Apple's policies.

*
Enterprise certificates are intended to be used for internal Apps at a company for use by employees.

*
They provide a way for companies to load apps on corporate devices without having to go through App store approvals.

*
Google and Facebook were both using their certificates to distribute Apps to the general public.

*
Since 2016, Facebook has been paying teens and adults $20 per month to install a data gathering "Facebook Research" app.

*
The revocations effectively killed distribution of ALL of internal apps for both companies. Consumer facing apps, other then the violating ones, were NOT affected.

*
Needless to say both companies worked quickly and closely with Apple to get their certificates and apps restored.

V
Change up in Apple's Siri strategy

V
The Information is reporting that Apple's Siri team lead, Bill Stasior has stepped down from his role in response to an overall switch in product strategy.

*
They note he is still at the company but don't mention in what capacity.

*
According to the rumor the is change in leadership is part of a restructuring effort by John Gianandrea who is planning to focus more on long-term research versus incremental updates.

AR App recommendations

*
James wrote in to recommend an App, [SkyView](https://www.terminaleleven.com/skyview/iphone/)

*
It's a pretty amazing app for viewing anything in the night sky

*
Uses the iPhone GPS and sensors to give you a view of the night sky and helps you locate stars, planets, and other celestial bodies (including satellites)

*
Has an AR camera mode.

*
Night mode, adjust the star magnitude to match the light pollution in your area

*
Can overlay constellations

*
Tap on an object, star, planet, etc. to get detailed information

*
USD $1.99 in the App Store

Apple Trade-in follow-up

V
Javier had had a bad experience using Apple's trade-in program managed by a company called Phobios

*
He did get the phone back after rejecting the $0 revised trade-in offer

*
It was functioning normally and he was able to install the OS just fine.

*
I asked for others experiences with using the program

*
Stories were mixed, but generally positive.

*
One person had an issue where they kept sending a laptop box for his trade in which was a Mac mini.

*
Many noted that you can generally get more money with other services or private sales, but the convenience make it worth it.

*
At least one person had his estimate revised upward after they received his trade-in.

*
You still might want to consider doing the full trade-in transaction first with the money going to an Apple Gift card to make your new purchase.

V
Vicente had a different but similar experience recently

*
Took his iPhone SE to a 3rd party Apple Authorized repair center for a battery replacement

*
After getting the phone back it wouldn't charge at all

*
The service center tried to claim the issue was pre-exisiting and that Vicente had know about it before turning it in for a battery repair.

*
When to the Apple Store and they did their best to try an diagnose the issue with the phone.

*
In the end they couldn't figure out exactly what was wrong, but suspected improper grounding during the repair. They replaced Vincente's phone for free.

V
Clearing saved wifi passwords

*
Last week we discussed a mystery related to wi-fi passwords stored on the Mac

*
Had a listener who found he was automatically connected to his wifi even after erasing his Macs drive and booting up a clean copy of the OS.

V
Said that he need to clear the NVRAM before the password was cleared

*
I argued that the password would not be stored in the NVRAM

*
There are posts online in support forms that claim they are.

*
I wonder is they are stored somewhere in the Recovery partition if you connected to the network in that partition

V
Scott wrote in to point out that if you use iCloud Keychain the passwords for known wi-fi networks would be sync'd

*
Not sure that was what happened in this case because they had not entered their iCloud credentials yet

V
Worth pointing out that these things are sync'd if you use iCloud Keychain

*
System Preferences > iCloud > Keychain

V
View contents of Keychain on your Mac

*
Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access

*
Stores logins, passwords, certificates, passwords

*
Click on iCloud on the left to see what's in the iCloud Keychain

V
Get a password from the Keychain

*
Double click item in list. Will open a window with the details for that Keychain item

*
Check the 'Show password' option

*
Enter your Mac's login password.

*
It will display the password.

*
On iOS you can go into Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Website & App Passwords (this will only have web ones)

V
Add a secure note to keychain

*
In Keychain Access, select the "Secure Notes" under the Category

*
Click the "+" icon

*
Enter a name for the note and then the contents

*
Can't access Keychain secure notes from an iOS device

*
The Notes app does have it's own "secure" notes and those would sync.

V
Secure a note in Notes on iOS

*
In the note you want to secure, click the "Sharing" icon.

*
In the Share Sheet actions choose 'Lock Note'

*
Enter your Notes password (one for all notes)

V
If you forget your password

*
Notes > Preferences > Reset Password (you can also change the password)

*
Only fixes it for future notes

*
Need to validate against your iCloud password if you're syncing.

*
Notes accounts that sync from a third-party service, like Gmail or Yahoo, won't include some Notes features and can't be locked.

V
Apple TV Gaming

*
We spoke recently about Apple TV as a gaming platform and how it never seemed to realize it's possible potential, especially for more casual gamers.

*
I asked for some of your thoughts.

V
Dan wrote in and said really what Apple needs is just the "right" game

*
In his opinion it may be Fortnite, which just added MFi Game controller support for the iOS version

V
I agree that the titles are the key, but that is where Apple has always fallen behind when it comes to gaming

*
Even when they get A-list titles, they often put up too many barriers for developers

*
Lack of high end GOU support, supporting the wrong/competing protocol (OpenGL), lack up driver support, storage limits on the Apple TV, etc.

V
Now there are rumors of Apple considering a gaming subscription service

*
Granted, more like the App Store's version of Netflix for "premium" iOS games

*
But what about a thin client app running on an Apple TV that taps into a gaming as a service platform?

*
Certainly Apple's chipsets in an Apple TV could be tweaked to support this sort of thing

*
There will be a lot of competition
