Malwarebytes
*
Malware, it's a thing. Even on our Macs. Adware, spyware, viruses. We stay diligent and Apple has our backs, but it's not always enough.
*
Even if you stay safe, it's likely a friend or family member maybe someone not quite a tech savvy or aware gets hit. As much as we try to help or protect them from themselves things happen.
*
You've likely heard me mention Malwarebytes on the show in the past. I really think is the best and easiest tool on the Mac for quickly scanning, removing, and preventing Malware.
V
One thing I really like is you can use it how best fits your situation.
*
Scan just when you need it or let it actively and proactively keep you safe.
*
Proven Malwarebytes technology crushes the growing threat of Mac malware.
*
Malwarebytes scans the average Mac in under 30 seconds, removing adware and unwanted programs that slow your Mac.
*
And when you need more active protection Malwarebytes detects and removes viruses, ransomware, and other malware in real time with advanced anti-malware technology. Catches dangerous threats automatically, so you’re protected without having to even think about it.
*
Finally, cybersecurity smart enough for the Mac. Visit Malwarebytes.com/mac for your free download and 14-day trial of their Premium offering.

Apple's Q2 financial results
V
Revenue of $58 billion, down 5% from the same quarter a year ago. They earned $11.56 billion profit
*
iPad revenue was up 22% and Services revenue was up 16%, but Mac revenue was down 5% and iPhone revenue was down 17%.
V
iPhone and Services now make up 74 percent of Apple's revenue (iPhone 54% and Services 20%)
*
Mac 10 percent
*
Wearables / Home / Accessories 9 percent
*
iPad 8 percent
*
Hit an all time high record for services growing 16 percent. Wearables / Home / Accessories grew 30 percent
*
Latest numbers from IDC show iPhone unit sales with a 30 percent drop year over year.
V
Airpods 3 coming this year?
*
My new Airpods 2 are barely broken in and apparently Apple is already planning to obsolete them.
*
According to DigiTimes suppliers are gearing up with Apple to possibly deliver then next generation of AirPods by the end of the year.
*
The big new feature, on that was rumored for Airpods 2… noise cancellation
V
Take this all with a grain of salt. As 9to5 Mac was apt to point out DigiTimes has a variable success record on Apple rumors
*
They had predicted that Apple's AirPower was "just a week away from shipping" just a few weeks before Apple announced that the project was cancelled
*
There are also counter rumors that AirPods 3 have been pushed back to 2020.
V
Still analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is claiming Apple could have two new Airpods models out by the end of 2019 or early 2020
*
He claims one set will be an all-new form-factor at a higher price
*
Internally he says the new buds will move to a system-in-package design improving yield rates and saving space, while lowering production costs.
V
I would love a set of Airpods with noise cancellation
*
Especially if it was controllable
V
Other rumors for Airpods we've heard in the past
*
Black color option
*
Health feature, like heart rate monitoring
*
Better water resistance
*
"Glass" finish
*
The biggest issue for many of these features… they require more battery
V
Surprise, people like the iPhone XR
*
OK, if you listen to this podcast it's not a surprise
*
I mentioned that, not to early adopters, but over the long haul the iPhone XR would be Apple's most popular iPhone and it looks like that's exactly what's happening.
*
According to data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) the iPhone XR continues to lead iPhone sales in the US for the second quarter in a row.
*
The iPhone XR captured 40 percent of iPhone sales, while the iPhone XS and XS Max combined had 25 percent
*
Kantar also released data showing that the iPhone XR was the best selling smartphone in the UK
V
The CIRP report also noted that consumers are choosing to pay up for additional phone storage and that new devices are also driving services growth
*
48 percent of buys are purchasing additional iCloud storage and about 21 percent subscribe to Apple Music
V
Rumors for the next iPhone, iPhone XI (will they go to 11?)
*
OnLeaks mocked up some 3D renders based on information they say came from CAD files of possible production designs
*
Camera bump that is integrated into the glass. No metal bezel
*
5.8-inch model slightly bigger, by about 1mm and just a hair thicker
*
Smaller notch and even smaller bezels. Report says “almost indistinguishable”
*
Slightly repositioned mic on back
*
Mute switch design like the old iPad. Up / Down vs left / right
*
A faster 18W USB-C power adapter and a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box
*
Next iPhone XS is expected to get the current dual-lens camera system
V
Apple and 5G
*
Apple had reportedly considered buying Intel's modem business at one point, but opted not to.
*
Now we have reports that One of their 5G modem project leads, Rubén Caballero, has left the company
*
This guy has been around since "antennagate" and is named on nearly all of Apple's 3G, LTE, and other wireless networking patents.
*
The team has reportedly been in "flux" since the Qualcomm deal
V
5G is coming, eventually, but speeds will be varied and you'll likely pay for it
V
Speeds in the range of 500Gbps and even possibly going as high as 1 to 2 Gbps
*
Keep in mind those top ends are lab based and not real world which will likely be much lower
*
The top speeds also require a technology called mmWave technology which doesn't travel far from the cell towers and doesn't penetrate materials at all. So good luck getting anywhere outside open urban areas.
V
Speaking of 5G, Ming Chi Kuo says Apple will have 5G in the iPad Pro models by 2021
*
To prepare, this year they may move to a "LCP Soft Board", liquid crystal polymer
*
It's a flexible way to connect components together and it's expected to be used to connect the antenna to the motherboard
*
Outwardly there are not expected to be any changes, with Apple continuing to produce 11 and 12.9-inch models.

Apple recalls some wall plug adapters
*
Apple issued a voluntary recall of some three prong AC wall plug adapters in Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.
*
Apple states that, in very rare cases, affected Apple three-prong wall plug adapters may break and create a risk of electrical shock if touched.
*
The adapters shipped with Mac and certain iOS devices between 2003 and 2010 and were also included in the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit
*
Apple knows of six incidents worldwide and has asked owners to stop using the adapters until they can be replaced, free of charge.
*
Affected three-prong wall plug adapters are white, with no letters in the inside slot where it attaches to an Apple power adapter. New adapters are white with gray on the inside portion that attaches to the power adapter.
*
These are only the laptop style adapters, not USB chargers
*
Apple has set up [a recall page](https://www.apple.com/support/three-prong-ac-wall-plug-adapter/) on their site with details.

Apple design team losses
*
At least four members of Ive's design team are leaving or are in the process of leaving
*
These are designers that have been on the team for decades so it's a bit shocking.
*
At least one said the reasons for his departure were taking more time to spend with his family
*
Departures in the design team have been rare though we say people leave in 2016 and 2017
V
Ive himself had stepped back from day-to-day involvement in 2015 while working on the Apple Park transition.
*
He returned to his main role as Apple Design Chief in 2017
*
The one designer, Rico Zorkendorfer, who spoke on record abut the departure said the staff turnover is simply a sign that's it time for the new generation of talented designers at Apple to take over. Saying, "We have incredible new designers" (at Apple)
V
Apple pulls parental control apps from store
*
The New York Times wrote up a piece about some parental control and screen time monitoring apps being pulled from the app store
*
The story alleged that part of the motivation could be that Apple doesn't like competition for their own app ScreenTime
V
Apple's Phil Schiller responded to an email and Apple also issued an official statement
*
The Apps were pulled because of use of MDM profiles and technology designed for IT departments, not consumers
*
The issue is that the method give the developer unfettered access to the devices. Fine if it's your IT department, but not so much if it's your families devices.
*
They could access your data, email, the cameras, and even wipe your device.
*
Apple changed their guidelines on this in 2017 and also contacted developer who were violating the policy and gave them 30 days to change how their apps worked.
*
Unfortunately in the fully sandboxed OS many of the monitoring and control features wouldn't be possible.
V
Apple Watch survived six months in the Pacific Ocean
*
Or at least washed up on the beach.
*
A surfer in Huntington Beach, Calif. lost the Apple Watch six months ago while surfing.
*
He spent an hour searching for it and even tried find my iPhone to no avail.
*
He had considered it lost and even bought a new Apple Watch, but then received a call that the Apple Watch had been found
*
A man who was beach combing came across it in the sand and was able to find contact info on it and contact the owner.
*
The watch worked but the display was "hazy" (report says from saltwater, but I'm guessing a good sandblasting).
*
It didn't say, but we might assume it was in "lost mode" which allows you to lock the device and add a message with contact info for anyone who might find it.

Flaky Airpods (and other) connections
*
Play comment from Dan
V
I have not personally had any issues with either my old or new Airpods
*
Well except the strange "zone" on my walk.
*
Have you tried simply unpairing and repairing them to "reset" the connection?
*
Are they dropping connection with all devices or just some devices?
*
Could it be battery issues?
V
Come to think of it I have had one or two times when the AirPods would just flake out.
*
Most of the time unpairing and repairing resolved the issues.
*
I think one time I gave up and just went to bed (solar flares?)
V
Mustang has another issue with his bluetooth devices and could also use some help
*
play comment
*
Yup, this is exactly one of the issues that AirPods and Apple's H1 and W1 chips were designed to deal with.
*
It wasn't clear, is it just "grabbing it first" and you have to then reselect it from your device or is it grabbing it mid listen? I assume the former.
V
Unpair your device from the Apple TV
*
Go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth. Select your accessory, then select Unpair Device.

Apple Watch issues
*
Play comment from Mitch
V
Curious what activities you may have done in Cancun
*
Apple Watch Series 3 and Series 4 have a water resistance rating of 50 meters. They may be used for shallow-water activities like swimming in a pool or ocean. They should not be used for scuba diving, waterskiing, or other activities involving high-velocity water or submersion below shallow depth.
V
I know that water ingress seems like the "logical" answer, but it is entirely possible it's another unrelated issue.
*
Battery swelling is a known issue and it can cause the seals, especially around the display to be compromised.
*
Also a reminder on maybe not always taking "no" for an answer.
*
Going into an Apple Store, if you can, can often yield a better result than just trying chat or phone support.
V
Be polite and explain clearly why you feel the resolution being offered is not satisfactory enough and state clearly what you think the resolution should be.
*
In this case, if you used the device with in the specification of the water resistance rating then you should have a reasonable expectation that the watch would not break.
