iPhone11’s are here. Let’s break ‘em
*
iFixit gonna do what iFixit gonna do.
V
iPhone 11 Pro
V
Two battery connectors? Curious.
*
Some have alleged it’s signs of intended bi-lateral wireless charging
*
Kuo had said Apple killed it last minute because they couldn’t get the desired efficiency they wanted.
*
Rene Ritchie says Apple did not put bilateral charging in the iPhones 11 so it can’t be enabled via a software update.
*
Also noted a “mysterious” board below the battery that could also be bi-lateral related
*
Slimmer logic board to give room for extra camera hardware.
V
iPhone 11
V
Same logic board as the iPhone 11 Pro
*
Compact rectangular “double-decker” design.
*
Doesn’t have the “mysterious” board under the battery.
*
7 percent larger battery
V
Apple Watch Series 5
*
Almost identical to the series 4
*
New ambient light sensor
*
Built in compass and 1.4 percent larger battery in the 44mm model
*
Minor changes to some of the connectors.
V
Drop Testing
*
Been done by a few outlets, CNET, SquareTrade, EverythingApplePro, PhoneBuff, and Tom’s Guide with mixed results
*
Worst was Tom’s guide and Phone Buff which cracked the glass from hip height. ~3.5 feet
V
For SquareTrade the glass cracked in a series of 6 foot drop tests.
*
Their drop surface looks like a concrete with embedded pebble surface
*
iPhone 11 Pro did survive their “tumble” test. A first every for an iPhone
*
It took drops from about 10 feet to crack the glass in the CNET and EverythingApplePro tests.
V
While the glass durability may be up for debate the display quality is not
*
DisplayMate has awarded the iPhone 11 Pro Max screen it’s “highest ever A+ grade”
*
71% higher peak brightness thanks the iPhone XS
*
Better screen visibility in ambient light (I noticed this)
*
Lowest screen reflectance, smallest brightness variation, highest visible screen resolution
*
Translation… it looks amazing. They called it “Visually Indistinguishable from Perfect”
V
The 2020 iPhone
*
Yup, it’s already begun
*
From who else, yup Ming!
V
Retro. New metal frame chassis taking some design notes from the iPhone 4
*
Back to the square band?
*
Kuo calls it a “more complex segmentation design”
*
Since it’s expected to be a 5G phone I would assume some of the design might be to allow for better antenna design and transparency
*
Kuo has also predicted in the past that 2020 models might feature new display sizes that are “smaller” and bigger? 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.7-inch designs. All OLED.
*
Rear facing time-of-flight 3D camera.

Mac Pro will be US Made
*
Apple announced it will continue to assemble the Mac Pro in the same facility they have been using in Austin, Texas
*
The value of the American made components in the 2019 Mac Pro will also be “2.5 times greater” than the 2013 model according to Apple.
*
Those US components will come form manufacturers in eight states including Arizona, Maine, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Vermont.
V
They also indicated that tariff exemptions on non-US components used in the making of the Mac Pro helped them with decision to keep the assembly in the US
*
Apple had applied for exemptions on 15 types of components and was granted 10 of them
*
unfortunately Apple still has not given us an exact release date beyond “Coming this Fall”.

Shortcuts Automations, Share ETA in Apple Maps
*
The new AirDrop interface that takes advantage of the U1 chip in the new iPhones
*
The glyph icon in the volume HUD will show the device you’re using (if it’s AirPods or Powerbeats Pro)
V
iPad OS
*
Version 13.1 a little earlier than originally expected. Apple had originally said the 30th
V
I think one of the best new features is the multi-app functionality
*
To have multiple of the same app paired with different apps in split view is really helpful
*
Or to have two browsers side by side. Why did it take so long
V
Multiple instances of the same app is also great
*
Can pull a Safari tab off and bring it to the top of the display and have it open a new instance
V
Swipe up to access the App Switcher (Manager?)
*
Tap and hold an app icon and choose Show All Windows
*
On this screen you’ll see all open windows with that app in it
*
In the upper right you can tap the “+” to launch a new instance of that app
*
Swipe up on an app to flick it off the screen and close it.
*
If you come back to the “Show All Windows” after closing some there is also a “Reopen Closed Windows” button.
V
A bug in iOS 13 and iPadOS can cause keyboard extensions to be granted full access even if full access hasn't been approved.
*
Apple says they’ll fix the bug in an upcoming update.
V
tvOS 13 and Apple TV Software 7.4 update (version 8.4.3) for 3rd gen Apple TV’s
V
tvOS 13 had a new Home Screen and multi user support
*
Press and hold the TV buttons to switch users
*
The control Center also has the time and date, search, a Now Playing widget, AirPlay controls, and a sleep option
V
tvOS now also has Apple Arcade, but didn’t seem to have all the same titles as my iPad.
*
Support for Xbox Wireless Bluetooth Controller and the PlayStation DualShock 4 Controller
*
New under water screensavers and picture-in-picture support

iPhone 11Pro Impressions
V
The setup process, for me, is just about flawless
*
I use iCloud backup and the hold device near the phone works great
*
Relogging in to some apps.
*
The new "contact" set up messed me up, but I fixed that.
*
Some of my custom Shortcuts broke
*
Love the new frosted glass and the midnight green color. Love my Meyer lemon yellow case even more
*
Cameras are really nice and night mode is awesome
*
Feels heavier than my iPhone XS
V
I did notice the display quality.
*
Especially in my car with bright sunlight.
*
Blacks are super rich.
*
Beyond that, it's an iPhone like any other iPhone X series or later.
V
iOS 13 has my back
*
Was at work a few days after upgrading and got an alert
*
Said that Nest had been using my location in the background for the last 3 days and asked if I wanted to change it’s permission setting
*
I think I’ve seen similar alerts in the past, but what was different about this one is it contained a map image with all the points where Nest had tracked my location
*
Cool and creepy.
*
Had options for setting it to “While Using” or “Never”
*
A few minutes later i got a similar notification about Yelp.
V
Can always review the location settings for your apps by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services
*
Scroll down the app list
V
Also look for the little location icons to tell which apps last used your location
*
hollow purple arrow = app may receive your location under certain conditions
*
Solid purple arrow = app recently used your location
*
Solid gray arrow = app has used your location in the last 24 hours.
V
That map setting is also in here under Location Alerts
*
Can toggle the ‘Show Map in Location Alerts’ setting.
V
The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max will notify you when a non-genuine Apple display is used for repair.
*
Displays a message that says “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine display” on the Lock screen for four days
*
After that the message moves to the Settings under General > About.
V
Apple teaches the world to sing
*
Another new feature of iOS 13 i had forgot about is the new real-time lyrics feature
*
Or, karaoke mode.
*
In the Music app while a song is playing tap the mini player to bring up the play sheet
*
Tap the conversation bubble icon with the quotes.
*
This will display the lyrics grayed out.
*
In real time the lyrics will highlight
*
background is dynamic based on the album area
*
You can scroll to review all the lyrics
*
You can also tap the “more” ellipsis and tap ‘View Full Lyrics’ to see just the plain lyrics.
V
At the bottom they display who the song was written by which is nice
*
Don’t often see the lyricists getting credit.
V
Apple added a “Lyrics to Live by” feature on Apple Music to show off the feature
*
It has videos of artists telling some of the stories behind their lyrics
