Right now it seems like Apple doesn’t have the right use case to make them appeal to a large consumer bases.

Could be what delays their release.

Also mentioned an Apple Watch with sleep tracking and a Mac with custom Apple processors.

October at an end, what happened?

Seems like we did not get an event for October and early November seems unlikely too.

Rumors the 16-inch MacBook Pro has gone into production at Quanta for release by the end of the month or in early November.

will apparently be equipped with Intel's "Coffee Lake" or "Ice Lake" processors

Have an "ultra-thin bezel design" and redesigned scissor switch keyboard.

Price is expected to be around USD $3,000

iPhone 11 sales seem strong

Rosenblatt Securities thinks iPhone 11 has sold almost 12 million units since it’s launch

That would put it 15 percent ahead of how the iPhone XR did last year

Overall they believe the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pros will sell roughly 70 million units before the end of the year.

While iPhone 11 sales are strong, they don’t think the Pros are doing quite as well

The reports says sales are down 15 percent vs the rate seen by the iPhone XS ’ last year

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners said 20 percent of iPhones sold in Q34 were new models

Despite the fact that they were only available for one week in the quarter

The breakdown? 9 percent iPhone 11, 6 percent iPhone 11 Pro, and 4 percent iPhone Pro Max

36 percent of the sales were for the iPhone XR

Overall I think the data shows that consumers are becoming more price sensitive when comes to iPhone updates and new features.

Apple Pay tops US Mobile Payments

Data from eMarketer claims that Apple Pay will have 30.3 million users in the US for 2019

That represents 47.3 percent of mobile payment users.

Beating out Starbucks to be the top mobile payment platform in the US

What has helped… more retailers supporting Apple Pay

It’s predicted that Apple Pay‌ will be available in 70 percent of U.S. retailers by the end of 2019

Apple wanted to buy a studio

Bloomberg’s says Apple had pursued buying imagine Entertainment. The studio founded by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer

This was before they ultimately started ordering original series and forming their own in-house studio.

Howard and Grazer ultimately said no to the buyout.

They didn’t want to be working for a large company.

Apple did get a “first look” deal for Imagine’s documentary projects.

Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty thinks Apple TV+ could bring in $9 billion in revenue by 2025

This assumes just one out of every 10 Apple users pays for the service.

The free year and low price point should help convert customers

Apple’s also predicted to see a 20 percent growth in Services next year.

I think that could be conservative

Apple did NOT go family friendly

There have been a few early premieres at festivals including a showing of “See”

See has adult themes and with violence and adult themes

The reviewer notes that they scenes “fit within the plot of the story and helps to shape the personality of the character(s)” but still not for all ages

The shows come with TV-MA and over 18 ratings in the US (15+ in the UK)

I can’t say that I’m not personally a little disappointed.

See looks like a great epic tale and the fact that I won’t be able to enjoy it with my family is disappointing

I watch a lot of “adult” level shows, but I still just feel like there are MANY of these shows that could back-off on the adult content and themes without harming the narrative and appeal to a broad set audience.

It’s odd to me that TV seems to be the opposite of movies in this regard.

Own an iPhone 5? Time to upgrade

Your OS. Also need the update for the the fourth-generation iPad with Wi-Fi and Cellular

Need to be on iOS 10.3.4 or later by November 3rd to continue to be able to use the App Store and iCloud.

The update was released back in July

Also addressed a GPS issue.

If you wait too long upgrading will require backing up and restoring on a Mac or PC since OTA updates will no longer work.

Only the iPhone 5 needs the update for the App Store and iCloud compatibility.

The iPhone 4s, first-generation iPad mini Wi-Fi and Cellular, iPad 2 with Wi-Fi and CDMA Cellular, and the third-generation iPad with Wi-Fi and Cellular should be updated to iOS 9.3.6.

Older iPod touch models or iPad models with Wi-Fi only don’t require an update.

Getting older macOS versions, part II

Looks like my advice on the last show almost worked.

Seems most could download back to High Sierra

After that the download links from Apple’s site seemed to fail

You’ll need to install macOS High Sierra on another USB stick, then boot from that, and then the older links should work

A little macOS inception, but hey.

iPhone 11 scratches?

Not long after the release of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pros there were reports of people with scratched screens

Some saying it happened within days or even hours of getting their new phones.

I generally avoided talking about it because these things are often reported like they’re an epidemic when they’re not.

I think part of the issue here is how Apple marketed this as the toughest glass ever in an iPhone

Less breakable doesn’t mean more scratch resistant

I mention this now because I did get a report from one member of the Maccast community who had a scratch on his iPhone 11

So here’s the dilemma, yes iPhone screens are scratching, but are they scratching more than they have in the past?

Every iPhone I’ve ever owned has had scratches on the screen at some time in it’s life

Not typically days after buying it, but it could happen.

JerryRigEverything did his scratch and hardness pick tests and this years screen scratched at the same level of hardness as last years. So scientifically it doesn’t seem like it’s more susceptible to scratching.

That said there are some pretty nasty threads with some pretty nasty photos.

Issue seems like it’s reported more on the iPhone 11 than the Pro, but there are reports of both getting scratches.

My iPhone 11 Pro has been without a screen protector since day one and I have no scratches.

If it’s really a concern for anyone I would advise using a screen protector.

So if you own a new iPhone 11 have you had issues with scratching?

Night mode and older iPhones

There might be some confusion about Apple’s new night mode feature and which devices support it.

I received a few emails from listeners with older devices who thought night mode would be available on their devices after the iOS 13 update.

I think Apple caused a bit of the confusion because at the iPhone 11 announcement they did make sound a bit like a lot of the work was done in the software.

At the same time the feature was announced at the iPhone event and not at WWDC

Still we should clear it up. Night Mode does require a new iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro or Pro Max

The reason is, like with a lot of Apple products, it’s a combination of hardware and software

Uses the larger image sensor in the new wide angle lens to capture more light.

Apple says this is a “new” wide angle sensor, but the tech specs are the same as the iPhone XS

Then uses the power and features in the neural engine in the A13 Bionic chip to do its magic.

You also need to hold steady, so the optical image stabilization is key as well

If you want really good Night mode shots using a tripod or setting the iPhone on a stable surface will help

It takes a series of exposures, including some long ones.

Night mode only works on iPhone 11 Series phones and only with the wide angle (1x) lens

Using Night mode

Come on automatically if you have the feature enabled

Can tap on the yellow moon icon to bring up the controls and slide to turn it off or increase the exposure

When you tap the shutter hold still while it counts down taking a series of images.

Important not to move while this is happening
