The Nebia by Moen Quattro Showerhead from Nebia
*
Backed by some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley, including TimCook, it’s designed by former Tesla, NASA, and Apple engineers who spent years researching and developing a superior shower experience that saves water.
*
Quattro is the world’s best high-pressure water-saving shower
V
For the first time, Nebia is offering four spray modes – including two powerful, high pressure spray modes in addition to its popular Nebia spa spray–satisfying all types of shower preferences.
*
My favorite mode is the “Angel Hair” which offers 150 streams of water. I gives me a great “high pressure” feeling shower while still saving water. Which in California is key for saving me on my bill.
*
And then the ”Soft Spray” offers a spa like experience that is great for soaping up while still staying warm.
V
We went with the nickel finish on the Quattro Rainshow
*
The finish is elegant and soft to the touch.
*
The design and quality is amazing and I love how well engineered it is, especially when switching modes. The control slider is large and easy to adjust with each mode locking into place with a satisfying “click”
*
The Quattro comes in 5 beautiful finishes, so you can get the one that fits your style and design. And while I went with the Rainshower versions it’s also available in a Handshower design.
V
The Quattro offers Nebia’s easiest installation yet
*
I was able to have mine installed within just a couple of minutes from taking it out of the box.
*
Quattro allows you to save water without compromising on experience. Each mode saves 40-
50% of water compared to a traditional shower.
*

Apple’s AR/VR headset to support Wi-Fi 6E
*
According to a note from Ming-Chi Kuo piked up by 9to5Mac
*
Says that future headset from Meta, Apple, and Sony will all adopt faster Wi-Fi 6E support
*
They need it for the faster transmission speeds and lower power consumption
*
Apple’s headset is expected to be a premium priced offering (maybe $3,000 US or more) with a “mixed” reality experience including both AR and VR
*
It’s thought that Apple will deliver the new headset sometime in the 4th quarter of 2022
*
Specs are more like just guesses at this point, but early rumors have mentioned 8K displays and custom Apple Silicon

Apple cuts back iPads to push iPhones
*
According to Nikkei Asia Apple has decided that at least one way to manage the global chip shortage is to reduce their own chip supplies for iPads so that their manufacturing partners can delver more chips for iPhone 13s
*
The report says that iPad production has been cut by 50% and that Apple is also reducing production of older iPhone models to prioritize the iPhone 13
*
That does mean that iPad lead times on Apple’s website have started to slip and Apple added messaging to it’s site this week reminding customers to shop early if they want items for the holidays
*
Apple is upgrading it’s “loaner” phone for lengthy iPhone repairs from an iPhone 8 to an iPhone XR

“Application out of memory” errors
*
Looks like, according to 9to5 Mac, there are more people report the “Your system has run out of application memory.” issue on their M1 Macs
*
This was something Maccast listeners noticed back in early September
*
The 9to5 reports seem to have see issues in apps like Mail, Final Cut Pro, Music, and even Finder
*
But there are reports that this is happening in other apps, on Intel systems as well and also in macOS Monterey and macOS Catalina
V
Now that doesn’t mean it’s not something new or limited to an issue with the new Macs or OS
*
Older reports and reports on Intel might actually be the system running out of memory
V
macOS Monterey “bricking” some Macs
*
There have been some small reports of macOS Monterey “bricking” some Macs preventing them from turning on
*
Specifically Macs with Apple’s T2 chips
*
This can happen if something goes wrong or if the update is interrupted when it’s performing firmware updates
*
Apple this week identified the issue and has rolled out a fix to prevent it from happening in the future
*
Apple rolled out an updated version of the bridgeOS firmware that runs on the T2 security chip
*
Any users impacted by this issue can contact Apple Support for assistance.
V
Apple shipped a ton of MacBooks
*
New data is out from Strategy Analytics
*
They estimate that Apple shipped a record 6.5 million MacBooks in the third quarter of 2021 with the M1 MacBook Air leading the charge
*
Up 10 percent from 2020
*
They cite the return to the office and school as reasons for the increase in shipments and also point out that if there weren’t global supply chain and freight shipping shortages the numbers could have been even higher.
*
The report also said that Apple now has a 10 percent share of the global notebook market making Apple the number four laptop seller in the world.
*
We are also expecting to see great holiday numbers from the updated MacBook Pros though again supply chain could keep those numbers lower than the actual demand
*
Looking to the future the site The Information says Apple and TSMC are already looking to move to a 3nm chip design, though those chips might be delayed until 2023
*
In 2022 they expect TSMC to use an enhanced version of the 5nm process they currently use for the M1 chips to deliver an updated version of the M1 to drive MacBook Air, Mac mini, and iMac updates
*
The performance gains are expected to be incremental and Apple could double the die count, like they did with the M1 Max (over the M1 Pro) to offer higher performance options in desktop systems
*
For future 3nm processors Apple could design chips with up to four dies with up to 40 CPU cores per chip
*
The new chips are reportedly codenamed ‘Ibiza’, ‘Lobos’ and ‘Palma’.
V
The updated Apple Silicon Mac Pro, which is expected this year, should use a version of the current 5nm M1 Mac chip with Apple likely doubling and quadrupling the die.
*
So up to 40 cores in the CPU and up to 128 graphics cores

Something I’ve been trying to do for myself recently is to make sure I’m taking the time to slow things down and make sure I enjoy even the small comforts in life.
*
Like sitting with my wife at the end of the week and enjoying the latest episode of Ted Lasso or listening to the sound of the rain that we get so rarely here.
V
Another comfort is getting to the end of a busy day and slipping on a pair of Overland sheepskin slippers.
*
I have their Men's Ethan Classics and it’s like wrapping my feet in clouds.
*
Overland is a family-owned American heritage brand that’s put comfort and quality first for nearly 50 years.
*
They offer outerwear, accessories, and home décor made from sustainable natural fibers like sheepskin, leather, and wool.
V
Overland uses expert craftsmanship to pair the highest-quality Merino sheepskin—which is naturally moisture-wicking, temperature-regulating, and anti-microbial—with supportive memory foam midsoles, in order to make slippers that feel better and wear better, for longer.
*
I was concerned that in “sunny California” that my feet might get too warm but that has not been a problem. The slippers are breathable and the design and craftsmanship is outstanding.
V
Something that really sets Overland apart is that they’re one of the only brands in the world that use true double-faced sheepskin, so the suede you see outside is the same piece as the fluffy sheepskin you feel inside.
*
It’s lighter, more breathable, and means there are no synthetic materials touching your feet.
*
Plus, you know you’re getting top quality material because it has to look and feel great all over to meet their standards.
V
If you want a pair of well-made, comfier-than-you-could-imagine slippers —these are the ones to get.

Apparently, the Visual Lookup feature I mentioned on the last Maccast is currently only available in the US.

Thanks to Daniel for letting me know. I hope they roll it out to more countries quickly.
V
Apple doesn’t “pay” for product placement. They will loan out devices and products readily to production companies to use in their shows, but the devices must be returned.
*
Thanks to Robert for pointing that out.
V
Is this thing on?
*
Darren got a new M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16 inch and has a problem, but it’s not the kind of problem you’d think
*
The fans won’t come on
*
He previously had a M1 MacBook Pro 13 inch and says that after about 1.5 to 2 hours of video game play the fans and cooling system would kick on
*
With the M1 Pro even after 2-3 hours of continuous gameplay the fans don’t come on.
*
His worry is that if they cooling system was broken, how would you even know?
V
One thing I would suggest is using a tool like [iStat Menus](https://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/) it can show you the fan speed
*
It will even display a low rotational speed even if it’s not something you can hear
V
Darren was finally able to get the fans to kick in by running the [Cinebench](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/cinebench/id1438772273?mt=12) graphics benchmarking tool
*
Had to run the 10 minute multi-core test twice to get an audible fan noise
V
Just funny to me that this is now the concern.
*
In the past it has been complaints of too much fan noise, overheating, and thermal throttling performance.
*
What a wonderful time to be a Mac fan (no pun intended)

Missing iCloud Tabs
*
Something that was pointed out by Justin
V
In the latest version of Safari on Mac and iOS when you tap the “tab” button (layered square or grid icon) it now takes you to the “Tab Groups” view
*
This view no longer shows your iCloud Tabs
V
iCloud tabs is a feature you get when you have Safari enabled in iCloud
*
It will show you tabs that are open on your other devices and allow you to access them from your current device.
*
Now to get to them it takes some extra clicks / taps
*
You will find them on the “Start Page” which you get when you add a new page/tab
*
This start page also has a lot of other features like Favorites, frequently visited, Siri Suggestions, reading list, the new “Shared with You”, etc.
V
You can enable / disable what’s on this page and even reorder it.
V
On iOS scroll down to the bottom of the start page and tap the “Edit” button to see the options
*
You can toggle items on or off and you can reorder them
*
If the “Use Start Page on All Devices” option is on then these settings will be sync’d to the start page on all your devices.
*
On Mac click the “Settings” icon on the start page (bottom right corner). Check or uncheck features and drag items around in the pop-up menu to reorder them
*
I find it easier to have my iCloud tabs near the top.
V
One other handy feature on the Mac is you can add the iCloud Tabs item to the toolbar
*
View > Customize Toolbar
*
Drag the “iCloud Tabs” item into the toolbar
*
Clicking the Cloud icon will show you the list of iCould tabs from your devices.

I was able to figure out why you don’t have the Erase all content and settings on Mac feature by reviewing [Apple’s Support Article](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212749) on the feature
V
System Preferences includes Erase All Content and Settings only when using macOS Monterey on a Mac with Apple silicon or a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip. If this feature isn't available or doesn't work on your Mac, follow these steps instead:
*
To restore factory settings, learn what to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac.
*
To erase, follow the steps to erase a Mac with Apple silicon or the steps to erase an Intel-based Mac using Disk Utility.
*
It’s amazing to me that Apple support can’t seem t be bothered to even do some looking into their own knowledge-base to get an answer
*
I get that what you experience is likely to vary from rep to rep, but Apple does do training and have systems. I think a rep should know that if they don’t know an answer it’s OK to say, “give me a minute” and then take some time to research an answer.

Family Sharing Albums
*
Bob has been sharing an iCloud account with his wife for years but recently had the need to separate the accounts.
*
Mostly everything has been OK, but he has noticed a couple of benefits that they had with the shared iCloud account that they miss
*
Once is sharing syncing of contacts
*
The other big one is Photos. With iCloud Photo Library or Photo Stream any photos they would take, regardless of device were shared.
V
I have often said that I think this is a big misstep in the Photo / Family Sharing ecosystem. I think many people would love to have a shared family library where the photos taken on any device go into a central library that everyone shares.
*
Or at least have an option for it.
V
Right now there are some workarounds
V
Use a “Shared Album” that all the members of your family are part of
*
You can give everyone permissions to add and edit photos
*
It’s neat too because you can comment on photos
*
Down side is it’s a pretty manual process and if you want an image that was shared with you (not one you shared) you need to manually save it back to your library
V
Use Airdrop to send the photo to the other person
*
Again manual, but it goes right into the library
V
Take advantage of the new “Shared with you” feature in Messages
*
Any photos shared via Messages now show up in “Shared with you”
V
To customize what content appears in the Shared with You section:
*
Go to Messages, then tap the conversation that has the content you want to hide.
*
Tap the name at the top of the thread.
*
Turn off Show in Shared with You.
*
Tap Done.
*
The content will still appear in the Messages thread, but it won't appear in the Shared with You section.
