News

Apple still struggles with Ive legacy
*
Bloomberg wrote a piece detailing Apple’s three year quest to find a replacement for lead designer Jony Ive
V
When he departed Ive was in charge of the OS and Hardware design.
*
Apple split the duties between Evans Hankey, hardware, and Allan Dye software
*
Hankey recently announced her upcoming challenges departure and that’s left Apple with a dilemma
V
The piece discussions the challenges of three options
V
Hiring from within is difficult because so many of the Ive era designers have already departed Apple
*
Reportedly many because they lost the autonomy after Ive and operations has more say over design to cover costs
*
Wonder if that’s what happened with the iPad Pro updates (camera not moving?)
*
Give hardware design to Alan Dye. Worries are this would possibly upset the current hardware design team
V
Hire an outsider from another company like Google or Microsoft.
*
Piece says this hasn’t worked well for Apple, but what about Kevin Lynch (Adobe)
V
The site The Information also is reporting that Apple is struggling with engineering in another area, search
*
It’s been believed for a while that Apple wants their own web search capabilities that could replace Google
*
Apple has invested a lot in staffing, acquisitions, and in AI / machine learning to reportedly support their efforts
*
Google is rumored to be paying Apple as much as $18 billion to $20 billion per year to remain the default search engine on all Apple devices.
*
But don’t expect Apple to bail on Goggle anytime soon. The report claims they are at “at least four years away” from being able to do so.
*
In the meantime… Apple continues to apply tech developed by the search teams more immediately to their recommendation engines and search in places like Apple Music, the App Stores, Siri suggestions, etc.
V
AirPods Pro production snag
*
MacRumors reports that according to a series of tweets from Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has asked their second supplier of AirPods Pro production, Goertek, to stop assembly due to production issues
*
Apple’s main supplier Luxshare will reportedly step up production to hopefully ensure Apple doesn’t lose too much production time
V
Apple did release a new firmware update for AirPods Pro this week
*
They don’t provide details as to what it addresses
*
9to5 Mac mentions reports of issues surrounding audio drifting and audio syncing.
*
Release notes from Apple are nonspecific, “bug fixes and other improvements.”
*
The update covers AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Max, and the original AirPods Pro
V
The new version is “5B58”, to check:
*
Connect your ‌‌AirPods‌‌ or ‌‌‌‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌‌‌ to your iOS device.
*
Open the Settings app.
*
Tap General.
*
Tap About.
*
Tap ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌.
*
Look at the number next to "Firmware Version."
V
9to5 Mac noticed that iOS 16.1.1 and the iOS 16.2 beta had a new "Everyone for 10 Minutes" option for AirDrop in China
*
It was reportedly being added because protesters have used AirDrop to spread anti-government material.
*
But Apple told Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman they plan to roll out the feature to everyone this year in an effort to stop what I’m going to call “AirBombing” (or AirDrop Spamming)
V
Apple also officially announced that Emergency Satellite SOS for iPhone 14 models will be launching in the U.S. and Canada later this month
*
Also that they would be using $450M from their Advanced Manufacturing Fund to further develop the infrastructure to support the feature. A good portion of the funding is believed to be going to Apple launch partner Globalstar
V
Apple’s headset getting closer
*
According to a new report from Bloomberg
*
Apple continues their push of hiring folks to work on AR and VR technology
*
Gurman claims the OS for Apple’s first headset is nearing completion and should be ready for a hardware release sometime next year. The OS codename is supposedly “Oak”
*
Says the team working on the hardware is the “Technology Development Group,” and Apple continues to hire in that area despite reports of slowing down other hiring efforts elsewhere
*
Some of the more recent job openings seem to be more focused on software and content and app frameworks
*
Apple also apparently has started to shift some internal staff over to the AR / VR project including and brought back Dave Scott, who allegedly lead teams on Apple’s car project, but left Apple in 2021.
V
DigiTimes reported this week that Pegatron would be Apple’s primary manufacturing partner for their headset
*
They believe production could begin in March of 2023
*
Predictions from Ming-Chi Kuo and others seem to indicate a possible second quarter of 2023 launch in time for WWDC

If you’ve listened to the show for a while you might know I’m a fan of board games. I love to sit down with my family and breakout a game like Settlers of Catan or Ticket to Ride.
*
One game I don’t like however is “hurry up and wait” especially when I’m not feeling well. We’ve all been there you need to see a doctor but their all booked out and you be waiting weeks, if not months to get an appointment. So frustrating.
*
That’s why I use the Zocdoc app to find quality in-network doctors who can see me within days, not weeks.

*
Zocdoc’s mobile app is as easy as ordering a ride to a restaurant, or getting delivery to your house. Search, find, and book doctors with a few taps.
*
Find and review local doctors—Read verified patient reviews from real people who made real appointments. So now, when you walk into that doctor’s office, you’re all set to see someone in your network who gets you.
*
Go to Zocdoc.com, find the doctor that is right for you, and book an appointment, in person or remotely, that works for your schedule.

Running macOS Ventura on unsupported Macs
*
David emailed me to ask about something he saw on [ArsTechnica](https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/opencore-legacy-patcher-delivers-unofficial-ventura-support-for-older-macs/) about a project called [OpenCore Legacy Patcher](https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/)
*
David asks: “Have you ever heard of this patcher and if so, do you know if it is safe to use?  It seems scary, but it would be nice to be able to run Ventura.”
*
There is a 28 minute “how-to” from Mr. Macintosh on [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LOqHMo5WSQ)
*
According to Ars it seems like this patcher is an off shoot of the patchers used for the “Hackintosh” movement.
*
They post the full source code on GitHub, so I assume if it was nefarious people could tell
V
While this is cool that this exists… I think you need to ask a few questions before trying it.
*
Why do you want to run an OS on a system that Apple says they do not support? There is a reason why Apple is not supporting specific older systems.
*
Apple is still offering security patches for older OSs like Monterey and BigSur
V
If you do want to try…
*
Backup, backup, backup.
*
Be prepared to troubleshoot issues or have features that probably don’t perform as well as you’d expect.
*
Could be a fun “look what I did” kind of experiment, but not sure I’d want to use it for a Mac I rely on day in and day out.
V
A few of my favorite ‘Apple’ things
*
25 percent off for black Friday
*
I like the “Electronics Repair Bundle” and the “Pro Tech Bundle”
*
They are ALL great.
*
I like the 511 Nano chargers, in 20W or 30W.
*
And checkout the new Anker 736 Charger (Nano II 100W) which can fast charge your MacBook, iPhone, and AirPods all at the same time in a charger that is smaller than your Apple 96W MacBook power brick
*
What are some of your favorite things? Hardware or software?

Thing of the Moment: OWC MiniStack STX
*
This one come from listener Corrie who was looking for more serious Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) expansion for his M1 Mac mini setup
*
Because the mini only has two Thunderbolt USB-C ports he was looking to expand and many docks only offer 2 extra ports, if you’re lucky.
*
The OWC MiniStack offers 3 additional Thunderbolt 4 40/GBs ports
*
It also has a built in SATA drive bay to fit an HDD or SSD and also a NVMe M.2 SSD slot
*
You can get it empty and configure your own storage or they offer pre-configured options with up to 26GB of total storage (18GB HHD and 8GB NVMe drive)
*
Can get with 60W or 96W Power Delivery
*
Need to have a Mac with Thunderbolt 3 or 4 support
*
Up to two external displays supported by Intel Mac machines over Thunderbolt connection. Apple silicon M1 and M2 Macs support one external display over Thunderbolt.
