Adam, if you really want to do Home Control, you need to look into Indigo (https://www.indigodomo.com). As the web page says, it is multi-protocol and extensible.

I started with X-10 (!) and also have Insteon and TP-link smart plugs and more. I have a motion sensor in the garage that turns on the garage light, but only after dark — and if I’m not home, Indigo sends me an email (not quite true home security, but getting there.)
I’ve also integrated my Wyze cam – through IFTTT – so it also send me email when motion is detected in my family room — but only after I’ve gone to bed, or once again, when I’m not home.

Oh, and it also integrates with Alexa (sorry Siri), so I can turn on/off anything with just my voice.

All of that is with some built-in logic, and lots of python scripts and plug-ins.

Can HomeKit do any of that stuff? This is true automation, doing stuff FOR me, not just letting me do it from my phone.

A long time listener, keep up the great podcast!
