Get Geeky with Tiger

Written by: Adam Christianson

Categories: Feedback

Listener Scott sent me this info about a great, and very in depth, article on the tech of Tiger.

John Siracusa writes these in-depth looks at the technology of OS X
and has been reviewing each release since DP2. He is a hard-core user
interface guy with some strong opinions of things Apple is still not
doing right (oddly, these are things they were doing right in the
pre-OS X days).

He also spends quite a bit of time talking about changes in the file
system, how Spotlight works behind the scenes, as well as what this
might all mean for where Apple is headed with OS X features.

I thought you might enjoy the read – one Mac geek to another.

Tip: Re-indexing Spotlight in Tiger

Written by: Adam Christianson

Categories: Feedback

Listener Sam sent in this tip:

Spotlight is a wonderful wonderful thing, but some people have noticed occasions when a document or group of documents have not been captured during the indexing process. In such cases, one might want to reindex the volume. Apple did not build into Spotlight a way to reindex, but it can be done quite easily.

1. Open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/)

2. Type the following:

sudo mdutil -E /

to reindex the root volume, or:

sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/volumename

to reindex another volume named volumename.

3. Enter your admin password when prompted to do so and press enter.

4. You will receive the message “Volume index removed. Index will be rebuilt automatically.” in the Terminal window. You can monitor the reindexing progress in the Spotlight toolbar drop-down window.

5. Hooray, get back to using Tiger!

BimP Podcast for LEGO fans

Written by: Adam Christianson

BimP PodcastI like LEGO and I have metioned it before on the show. Well it turns out there is a MacCast listener who does his own LEGO podcaast. Here is a snippet of the email he sent me:

I noticed during the last podcast that you were a fan of LEGO. Just
wanted to let you know that I have started a new LEGO podcast. On the
show we discuss LEGO fandom for the adult fan of LEGO (AFOLs) and
whatever items I think might be of interest to LEGO fans (I sneak a
MAC plug in every chance I get). Time permitted (and I know your time
is precious!), check out my podcast at:

If your into LEGO you may want to check it out.

Inspiration for iPod Design

Written by: Adam Christianson

Listener Ant, posted this in the MacCast forum and it is very interenting. Turns out the iPod design might be more retro than we all thought.

Would of been cool if the Lisa was the first Apple computer to play music (given that the mascot is holding an iPod), so I thought I’d take a look at the 22 year old Apple Lisa User Manual (downloadable as a PDF) to find out! Didn’t find a mention of music (though could of missed it) but something that nearly made me fall off my seat, before I realised what it was, is the following pic, taken from page 226 of the manual…

Apple Mouse (iPod) Apple iPod (Mouse)

Is it just me or does that have an uncanny resemblance to an iPod! Spooky. For those that haven’t worked it out yet, it’s the bottom of the mouse from the Apple Lisa.

Another MacGeek Logo

macgeeklogoI just go this from MacCast listener Jimmy.

I’ve been listening to the Maccast for several months now and have even begun to use the forum. GREAT JOB! PLEASE KEEP IT UP. I am a professional graphic designer/writer and I really enjoy the podcast. I listen to it in my car during my commute. The reason for my email is I was doodling several weeks ago and came up with an idea for a possible logo. Well, it has been sitting in my sketchbook with a note to send you a copy for a while now. It is SO funny that when I visited the site tonight I saw that you ALREADY have a new logo already. Anyway, for what it’s worth, I thought I’d send mine anyway.

I like the new one, so please don’t consider this as a “knock” on it. As I said, I came up with it a while ago, but have just been too lazy to send it. The concept plays upon your intro “for mac geeks by a mac geek” and builds on your previous logo. I got to thinking, what would a mac geek look like? This logo looks like a geeky representation of the Finder, complete with tape covered, horn-rimmed glasses. I thought the over-magnifed eyes made it even more unique. I have attached a pencil sketch for you.

Your PC wants to be a Mac, really.

Listener Shooby sent me the following info on a program that turns WinXP into OS X, at least visually. It look pretty cool, but it tweeks a lot of stuff, DLLs and registry included so use at your own risk. Also the website is really cool. It looks and operates just like OS X, but in a browser. Amazing.

There’s a program for us PC users who are really into macs or are saving up to get a mac called flyakite. Basically, it replaces DLL’s and other system files to pretty much make your pc like a mac. It’s on version 2.0 right now, and I have to say, IT’S FLIPPING AWESOME! I took a screenshot and attached it for you to see. I’m using it to get used to using a dock and mac interface and stuff before I get my powerbook in June, I suggest all PC mac enthusiasts use it too!
